Google set to buy HTC

There is no smoke without fire they say

According to reports by the Taiwanese publication Commercial Times (cited by Digitimes, via Phone Arena), HTC is deep in talks with Google for the sale of the company. The report goes further into detail. It claims the Taiwanese company wants to sell the failing smartphone business but it wants to retain its Vive VR business. The talks are said to be in the final stages. Both the companies could reach a final agreement before the closing of this year.

Will Google actually buy HTC

This story is a continuation of a report by the Bloomberg back on August 24th. The report said that HTC is considering all of its options. These include taking an investment from one of the investors or selling the Vive business. The report said that Google was one of the forerunners to do the deal.

HTC needs help

It is no secret that HTC needs help of any sort. The Taiwanese company released its revenue for August and it was disastrous, to say the least. The revenue is the lowest in thirteen years! The company made less than $100 million and the revenue was 51.5% lower than the month of July.

Is there any truth this time around?

After Google purchased Motorola and then quickly sold the company to Lenovo, everyone assumed Google was done with the hardware side of smartphones. But this was in 2014 and things have changed. Now Google has its own line of smartphones. Google might have realized that in order to grow and challenge Apple, it has to control software, services, content, AI, cloud, and hardware. It is already the clear winner in the nonhardware areas and buying HTC and its factories and workforce can help it build up its hardware goals. Essentially the purchase can help Google reach the elite.

Of course, at this point, all of this is a rumor. Only time will tell if there is any truth to all of these.
