Google to build a Snapchat esque news system

The company takes inspiration from the very company it tried to buy!

Snapchat has quickly grown in popularity. What started as a small app for teens has quickly gained traction to be one of the largest social media apps right now. Out of all the features Snapchat offers, one feature has been very popular. This feature is the Discover feature. This feature allows brands to make easy to read stories that are then shared on the app. Now according to reports coming out of Silicon Valley, Google is looking to follow the same path.

Details about this Google project

Reportedly called “Stamp”, it will help share media content easily. Discussions have begun with a number of companies. These companies include Vox Media, CNN, Mic, The Washington Post, and Time who are all willing to get involved in the project. The official press release about the project is rumored to be around next week!!

How will it work?

Google is building the Stamp system around its accelerated mobile platform (AMP) that optimizes mobile webpages for faster loading. The Stories + AMP (STAMP) platform could represent news as “several swipeable slides encompass text, photos and video”.

Stamp would follow a method used by both apple and Facebook where they inject content into their services. Google has a major advantage over all of them. Since it is a search engine, it can deliver content directly from the search results

A Google spokesperson replied to Engadget with the following statement when asked about the project. “The success of the open source AMP project is down to the constant collaboration with publishers that involves working early on upcoming features. We don’t have anything to announce at the moment but look forward to sharing more soon.”

If Google follows up with this project, it is sure to be a great success and it makes sense for the company to take advantage of it’s massive online presence to do something of this scale.
