EA Sports' long running franchise is back!

The long running EA Sports franchise makes a return with its latest game named Need For Speed Payback. Here we take a look at how the game fares.

The plot of Need For Speed Payback

Most NFS games followed cops vs robbers storyline but it ditches it this time around in favour of street racing. The protagonist of the story is Tyler Morgan who falls in debt to a casino owner after he (Tyler) loses the owner’s Koenigsegg to a woman called Lina Morgan. Lina runs the street racing scene for an organization called The House. Tyler then assembles a gang to exact revenge and take down The House.

While this sounds intriguing on paper, the plot is quite dull and thin. The characters are pretty bland. What is worse is that interesting parts of the game are taken out of your hands and a cutscene shows the part. The game tries to give off a Fast and Furious vibe but it easily fails.

Gameplay of the Need for Speed Payback

The open world in the game pretty huge and varies quite a lot. The car handles are the same as any other game. Some off-roading vehicles have a tendency to fishtail but the majority of the cars are tail happy and easy to drift with. Certain situations require you to fight with cop cars which adds for variation. There are specific techniques to send the cars tumbling like a Hollywood action sequence.

Need for Speed Payback

On the plus side, there is plenty to do in the game. There are the street races, racing off road, drifting and yes plenty of drag races. You get XP for running speed cameras and smashing billboards among other activities. You can find discarded cars in isolated locations and customize them back to beasts.

All in all, the game lacks plenty when compared with games like Forza Horizon 3 and those who do not buy it will not lose much.
