Google Pixelbook Quick Review

A Chromebook that walks the talk

0

Google has released a long rumoured version of their Chromebook; the Google Pixelbook. There was a time Chrome OS was not taken seriously. It was always considered fit for a second laptop as it could not handle hard tasks. However, this has not changed and Chromebooks can support Android apps and do so much more.

Design of the Google Pixelbook

Google’s device has a striking design language that closely follows the Pixel smartphone. The hybrid laptop is made of silver aluminium and comes white accents. The lid is made of glass which helps signal pass into the laptop. It has two USB Type C ports, a headphone jack, volume controller and a power button on the sides. Similar to most hybrid laptops, the Google Pixelbook comes with a 360 degree hinge which means you can use it in a number of modes and positions. The keyboard has 0.8mm of travel making it fun to type on and the keyboard is not cramped and has a nice backlight.

Performance and battery of the Google Pixelbook

Chromebooks do not usually feature a lot of high end specs. The Pixelbook however, comes with a quad-core Intel Core i5 processor paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. This is the base model which starts at $999. The highest spec’d model has a Core i7 inside it, 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD. It will set you back $1649. Performance is quite smooth, as can be expected. Android apps work smoothly even when multiple apps and tabs are open.

On the downside, this performance vastly affects the battery life. Google claims the device can last for ten hours but according to tests done, it usually falls short of that figure. The tests show the device lasts for around eight hours. The plus side is that it comes with USB-C power adapter. This means the device charges up fast. According to the company, charging for 15 minutes will allow you to work for two hours.
