Why is everyone talking about this app?

It is a usual occurrence in the tech world, where a new app bursts into the scene and sends everyone into a frenzy. This time around, the app is Sarahah. Only a month since it was released, it is already sending waves of concern around the world. But why is that?

What does Sarahah do?

Simply put, it is a messaging app but it happens anonymously. After you join it, you can share the link to friends or on social media. A person with the link can send anonymous messages. The person who receives the message will never know who sent it.

Beginning of the app

Initially, Sarahah was only a website with one purpose. This was to allow employees to post feedback about their employers but in an anonymous manner. As the website grew popular, the developer thought it could also work on a personal level. This is when it started to get popular in the Middle East as well as Africa. In June of 2017 Sarahah released in the version of an app for both iOS and Android. This was what made the app popular in the Western part of the world.

What is the issue with it?

The issue of the app is people taking advantage of anonymity to say negative comments and cyber bully people. Multiple guardians and parents and kids have said they have seen instances of cyber bullying. This of course varies. Some say they haven’t got anything negative while some say they have faced death threats. In certain occasions, even the family of the user has been threatened.

Cyber bullying is nothing new and Sarahah did not kick start it. But because of the anonymity provided, it gives a platform for trolls and bullies to say anything they want. If your kids use the app, it is best you monitor the usage.
