Nest, the smart connected device company owned by Alphabet (which also owns Google), launched a new thermostat this week. The thermostat is called the Nest Thermostat E. The product is much cheaper than their flagship product sold by the company; the Nest Learning Thermostat.

Information on the Thermostat E

When compared with the Nest Learning Thermostat, the Thermostat E is different in design. It is meant to merge with the wall and comes with a frosted display. This allows you to read it better when you get close to it. The polarized lens is supposed to soften the LED when you move away from it. This way it doesn’t call attention to itself.

The Nest Thermostat E has most of the same features as the original product. It can automatically change the temperature according to the time of the day. It can also sense when the house is empty and change the temperature accordingly. As with the previous model, it can be remotely controlled with an app too. The downsides are that it does not show the time or the weather, which the previous model did. Another point is that it might not be compatible with more expensive higher end heating and air conditioning systems.

Probably the largest difference in both of them is the price. The Nest Learning Thermostat is sold at $249 while the newer model goes for $169. This makes it a viable option for mid income houses who want to join the smart house trend. Nest has also sent out invites to members of the media for a big press event that it will hold on September 20. There’s no word yet on what the company might reveal on that date. Previous rumors claim it may be making a connected doorbell or some other home security products.
