Acer Chromebook Spin 11 review

A rugged companion to a school goer

0

Acer recently released a rugged Chromebook. Called the Acer Chromebook Spin 11, it has a couple of unique features.

Design of the Acer Chromebook Spin 11

The laptop has an 11.6 HD screen that makes it quite portable. It weighs 1.4 Kg and measurements of 11.65 x 8.11 x 0.82 inches. Plastic is used for the build and there are rubber bumpers on the edges. The company says that the laptop is US MIL-STD 810G military spec certified for rough environments and abuse. There are two webcams. One is at the top in the traditional spot. The other is above the keyboard for when you want to use the laptop in the tablet mode.

The keyboard is a pleasure to use and the touchpad gave no issues during testing. The laptop can take a drop but it does not look the price. The Acer Chromebook Spin 11 costs $399 but it does not look the part.

The display, however, is quite disappointing. The screen is not bright enough while texts look rough on the IPS LCD display. A Wacom stylus accompanies the Chromebook. It is quite simple and there is nothing fancy about it.

Performance of the Acer Chromebook Spin 11

Performance of the laptop is sub par. It lags often even opening a tab takes longer than usual. Multiple tabs will slow down the machine and it is best for just basic use. The same happens when using Android apps. Basically put, the performance does not live up to the price tag. The only place of excellence is the battery life. The Acer Chromebook Spin 11 hits a few minutes short of 11 hours, which is pretty impressive.

The Acer Chromebook Spin 11 is best for those who need a spill proof laptop and a rugged device that can take a knock or a drop. Expect a drop in the performance, however. You can find plenty of similarly priced Chromebooks that offer better performance.
