New Google App feed is rolling out

0

There has been a long rumour that a redesign of the Google App was imminent. These rumours were based on the teardowns conducted on the APKs. It shows that there might be a new navigation bar for the feed. Furthermore, it shows that the UI objects might be rounded. However, this is a design that might displease some people. Google is nevertheless releasing the update so people need to get used to it.

A user on Reddit was the first person to notice this update. It seems to be releasing with version 7.15 of the Google App. Some people are reporting that they have not received it yet. This means that this could be a server side change. The user went as far as to post screenshots of the update; both before and after.

On a personal opinion, the update looks pretty good. The cards look playful and the navigation bar below has more icons than before the update. All the icons are now round, even the search bar and the search results. The hamburger menu was previously on the top left. It has also been shifted to the bottom. This is an aesthetically pleasing change as it can be easily accessed by anyone using the phone with one hand. There are no labels on the icon but the functionality remains the same. What is absent though, is the icon to launch the Google Assistant.

The latter tab is due to the fact that this new design removes the navigation drawer. This new tab now houses the account switcher, as well as settings and shortcuts to Saved, Reminders, Customize, and Managed searches. This is a particularly inconvenient change that limits fast access.

The background of the app is white now, rather than the light grey. This mimics the change on the Google Assistant.
